The Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have sharply criticized former prime minister Imran Khan over his alleged admission of orchestrating a protest outside the Pakistan Army’s General Headquarters (GHQ).

This happened in response to what Khan said to reporters on Monday during a court session at the Adiala jail. Khan said that before his detention, he had called for a nonviolent protest to take place outside the GHQ in Rawalpindi. In reaction to activities taken by police officials at his Zaman Park home, this call was made.

Party leaders have since stated that the media misreported Khan’s comments, asserting that he never made such a statement.

In a forceful response, Punjab Chief Minister and PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz said that the “mastermind” of the May 9 occurrences had now admitted to planning and enabling these attacks. Maryam charged that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was an anarchist organization whose subversive actions were intended to harm the state. She further said that Khan’s home in Zaman Park was used as a terrorist gathering place where people trained to make petrol bombs and plot attacks against the government. She claimed that “Zaman Park served as a training ground for terrorists.”
