Chinese scientists achieved a significant medical breakthrough by successfully curing a patient’s diabetes using an innovative cell therapy.

This groundbreaking therapy, featured in the journal Cell Discovery on April 30, resulted from a collaborative effort between Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, the Centre for Excellence in Molecular Cell Science at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Renji Hospital.

The patient underwent the cell transplant in July 2021, as reported by the South China Morning Post, and astonishingly, within eleven weeks, he no longer required external insulin.

Throughout the subsequent year, he gradually reduced and eventually ceased taking oral medication for blood sugar control. A lead researcher stated that “follow-up examinations indicated a significant restoration of the patient’s pancreatic islet function.”

Professor Timothy Kieffer from the University of British Columbia praised the research, noting that the patient has been insulin-free for 33 months.

Kieffer remarked, “I believe this study marks a significant advancement in the field of cell therapy for diabetes.”
