A tragic incident occurred in Mumbai as a massive billboard collapsed during a thunderstorm, resulting in the deaths of at least 14 individuals and injuring dozens, as reported by local authorities.

The collapse happened in the Ghatkopar eastern suburb, damaging houses and a nearby petrol station due to strong winds and heavy rain late on Monday.

Rescue efforts were underway throughout the night and into Tuesday morning as people were trapped under the debris. The thunderstorm also caused significant traffic disruptions and impacted operations at Mumbai’s busy airport.

According to Mumbai’s municipal corporation, 74 individuals were hospitalized for injuries, with 31 already discharged.

Videos and images circulating on social media depicted the towering billboard swaying before collapsing, causing destruction in its path.

The local weather forecast had warned of moderate rain and strong winds in the Mumbai district, leading to flight diversions and a brief suspension of operations at the airport.

Mumbai faces annual challenges during the monsoon season, often experiencing flooding and related incidents from June to September.
