Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the privatization of government-owned enterprises except for strategically vital state-owned entities during a review meeting in the federal capital. The meeting focused on matters aligned with the Ministry of Privatisation and the Privatisation Commission, unveiling a roadmap for the Privatisation Programme 2024–2029.
PM Shehbaz emphasized transparency in the privatization process, directing the live broadcast of all phases of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) privatization. He stated that the government’s role is to create a conducive environment for investment rather than engaging in business operations, highlighting the benefits of privatization in saving taxpayers’ money.
The meeting discussed completing pre-qualification for PIA’s privatization by the end of May and also touched on the privatization of the Roosevelt Hotel. The government is collaborating with experts to expedite the privatization process.
Federal Minister for Privatisation Abdul Aleem Khan noted that the PIA’s privatization opens doors for local and foreign investors, enhancing investment opportunities post-restructuring. He highlighted the removal of most liabilities from PIA’s balance sheet, encouraging potential interest from the business community in acquiring the national airline.
