In a groundbreaking move set to shake up the cinematic landscape, director Sam Mendes has announced plans to helm four separate feature films, each focusing on a different member of The Beatles – Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.
These films will intersect to weave a comprehensive narrative chronicling the journey of the legendary band leading up to their iconic breakup in 1970.
According to a press release, the projects have received full life story and music rights from Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the families of the late John Lennon and George Harrison. Mendes, known for his acclaimed works such as American Beauty and 1917, expressed his honor at taking on the task of telling the story of what he described as “the greatest rock band of all time.”
Sony Pictures Entertainment will finance and distribute all four films theatrically, with a planned release date in 2027. The studio promises an “innovative and groundbreaking” strategy for the release, although specific details have yet to be revealed.
While the decision to premiere all four films in the same year may seem risky, recent successes in the music movie genre have proven otherwise. Films like Elvis and Bob Marley: One Love have exceeded expectations at the box office, signaling a growing appetite among audiences for cinematic renditions of musical legends.
Mendes will not only direct but also produce the films alongside his Neal Street Productions partners Pippa Harris and Julie Pastor. Apple Corps Limited, the multimedia organization founded by The Beatles in 1968, will be executive produced by Jeff Jones.
In a statement, Harris described the project as a “uniquely thrilling and epic cinematic experience,” emphasizing the privilege of having The Beatles’ blessing for the endeavor.
This marks the first time The Beatles have granted their full support for a scripted film, despite being the subject of numerous documentaries and inspired projects over the years. Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman expressed his excitement for the collaboration, stating that Mendes’ vision, coupled with the music and stories of The Beatles, will create a cultural seismic event for audiences worldwide.
