Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has officially got bail in the Toshakhana and £190 million cases by approaching the Islamabad High Court.
Imran’s legal counsel filed separate applications for bail in both cases, urging the court to grant bail until the final decision is reached in the accountability court.
This move comes after the accountability court previously rejected Imran Khan’s bail plea in both cases. The new applications specifically name the NAB chairman, the director general, and the investigating officer as parties involved in the legal proceedings.
Simultaneously, the Islamabad High Court recently entertained petitions aimed at setting aside Imran Khan’s jail trial in the Toshakhana and £190 million references. Chief Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri presided over the hearing, focusing on appeals settled against the jail trial notifications.
Imran Khan’s legal representative, Shoaib Shaheen, referred to a prior decision by Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb in a similar case and proposed transferring the current case to the same court. Furthermore, the lawyer requested a stay order on the trial proceedings for both cases.
Chief Justice Farooq emphasized that a jail trial is not conducted in-camera and clarified that the sole criteria for assessment are whether the proper jail trial procedure was followed or not.
Justice Jahangiri obtained clarification on the issues with the notification for the jail trial.
Shoaib Shaheen stated that the authority for a jail trial lies with the judge of the concerned court, but in this case, the reference had not been filed with the court. The legal proceedings are prepared to unfold, as Imran Khan’s legal team navigates the complexities of the bail applications and challenges to the jail trial notifications in the Islamabad High Court.
