Famous Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has recently exposed an unexpected connection with Serbian tennis maestro Novak Djokovic, shedding light on their unique virtual friendship that extends beyond the field of cricket and tennis.
In a candid revelation captured in a video released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Kohli shared insights into the origins of their virtual camaraderie.
The cricket icon disclosed that the digital friendship took root when he spontaneously messaged Djokovic, only to find out that the tennis legend had initiated contact even before him.
“I got in touch with Djokovic very organically. I was just looking at his Instagram profile once and just happened to press the ‘message’ button. I thought I would say ‘Hello’ [to him].
However, I saw a message from him on my DM already. I [had] never opened it myself [before],” explained Kohli, revealing the unexpected start of their digital connection.
Expressing mutual admiration and respect, Kohli recounted their exchange of messages, with the cricketer offering congratulations on Djokovic’s outstanding achievements.
The 2023 ODI World Cup player of the tournament emphasized the significance of connecting with global athletes excelling at the highest level, sending a powerful message of inspiration to the next generation.
“There has been mutual admiration and respect. It is nice to connect with global athletes who are excelling at a high level. Collectively, it is sending out a message of inspiration to the next generation in a way,” remarked Kohli.
Highlighting Djokovic’s appreciation for Kohli’s achievements, the cricketer mentioned receiving a personal message from the tennis ace on his 50th ODI century.
Kohli expressed a desire to meet Djokovic in person, envisioning a casual moment over a cup of coffee when their paths cross, whether in India or during Kohli’s travels.
Djokovic previously revealed their ongoing text messaging friendship on Sony Sports Network. Despite not having met in person, Djokovic expressed his admiration for Kohli’s career and achievements, adding humor as he mentioned his quest to improve his cricket skills before visiting India.
As two global sports icons bridge the gap between cricket and tennis through their digital bond, their unique friendship serves as an inspiring testament to the camaraderie that excels sporting disciplines.
