Scottish adventurers Chris and Julie Ramsey have announced the triumphant conclusion of their nine-month, 17,000-mile “Pole To Pole EV” expedition.

This groundbreaking journey marked the world’s first-ever drive from the 1823 Magnetic North Pole to the South Pole, accomplished aboard a specially modified Nissan Ariya e-4ORCE electric vehicle, generously provided by Icelandic specialist Arctic Trucks.

The electric vehicle, enhanced with larger tires and ice-friendly gear, demonstrated remarkable resilience despite a reduced range of 150 to 200 miles due to the necessary modifications.

Throughout the challenging Arctic and Antarctic terrains, the duo employed creative methods to maintain the battery’s optimal performance. Techniques included building snow walls and utilizing a dedicated tent to keep the battery warm in sub-zero temperatures.

In their commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly exploration, the Ramseys utilized a mix of energy sources to power their electric vehicle. A 5kW wind turbine, a prototype solar hybrid charging solution, and a petrol generator were integrated into their strategy, showcasing the adaptability of electric vehicles in extreme polar conditions.

The adventurers also collaborated with Enel X Way to install charging infrastructure in Central and South America, strategically placing chargers along their route.

This not only contributed to the feasibility of their journey but also played a role in extending the electric Pan-American charging corridor, promoting sustainable transportation solutions across diverse landscapes.

This remarkable achievement follows the Ramseys’ 2017 electric vehicle feat when they completed the Mongol Rally in a modified Nissan Leaf Acenta. That journey served as a testament to the evolving charging infrastructure along the route and the growing capabilities of electric vehicles in long-distance expeditions.

The “Pole to Pole EV” expedition not only stands as a testament to human creativity and determination but also serves as a pivotal moment in proving the viability of electric vehicles in extreme environments.

Chris and Julie Ramsey’s odyssey highlights the potential for sustainable transportation solutions and reinforces the ever-expanding capabilities of electric vehicles on a global scale.
