The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) was honored with the prestigious ICC Global Award-2023 by the International Code Council (ICC) during the United Nations COP28 Climate Conference held in Dubai on Friday, December 8th, 2023.
A distinguished four-member delegation from PEC, led by Chairman Engr. Muhammad Najeeb Haroon participated in the event where they were presented with the ICC Global Award-2023 by Marisa Lago, Under Secretary of the US Department of Commerce, and Judy Zakreski, Senior Vice President of ICC Global Operations.
The award was a testament to PEC’s significant contributions, particularly in updating the Building Code of Pakistan and the development of the Green Building Code of Pakistan-2023, which includes provisions for Rainwater Harvesting for Buildings.
Marisa Lago commended PEC for its national role and acknowledged Pakistan’s earnest efforts to align with global sustainability goals by adopting and implementing these crucial building standards. She recognized Pakistan’s commitment to decarbonizing the built environment and applauded the country’s endeavors to address climate change impacts through proactive measures.
Chairman Engr. Muhammad Najeeb Haroon expressed PEC’s commitment to collaborating with local stakeholders, both in the public and private sectors and sought financial support from national and international organizations.
He emphasized the importance of enforcing these codes through capacity building, policy-making, and incentivizing society to conserve energy, and water, and mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change on Pakistan’s built environment.
The award ceremony, held during the session on “Decarbonizing The Built Environment: Building Codes and Capacity Building for Implementation and Enforcement,” was globally live-streamed and drew widespread participation from the international community and experts attending the UN COP28 Climate Conference.
This recognition not only elevates PEC’s standing on the global stage but also reflects positively on Pakistan, particularly within the engineering community. The ICC Global Award-2023 serves as a testament to the country’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
