During a briefing, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller addressed a query regarding the May 9 riots in Pakistan.

He stated that the United States firmly opposes incidents of vandalism, looting, and arson, not just in Pakistan, but globally.

Miller emphasized that while the US stands against such destructive actions, it unequivocally supports legitimate and free expression, including the rights to protest and peaceful assembly.

He emphasized that all protests should be carried out peacefully and that governments should handle them in accordance with the rule of law and respect for free speech.

Highlighting the shared challenges, Miller noted the significant suffering of the Pakistani people due to terrorism. He reiterated the mutual interest of both nations in combating regional security threats.

In response to another question, Miller mentioned that the United States partners with various Pakistani civilian institutions and regularly engages with the Government of Pakistan.

These collaborations aim to identify opportunities to build capacity and enhance regional security, particularly through their annual high-level counterterrorism dialogue.
