The federal government has recently declined the Punjab government’s proposal to suspend popular social media applications such as Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, and WhatsApp during Muharram 6 to 11.

Instead, federal authorities have opted to implement stringent security measures specifically tailored for Muharram. They have granted permission only to shut down mobile phone signals at specific locations where religious processions and large gatherings are expected to take place.

The Punjab government’s initial request aimed to address concerns about misinformation circulating on social media, which could potentially escalate sectarian tensions during Muharram.

The federal government’s decision reflects a careful consideration of maintaining both public safety and open communication channels during this sensitive period of religious observance. By focusing on localized signal shutdowns rather than a blanket ban on social media, they aim to strike a balance that ensures security without entirely restricting the flow of information and communication across the country.
