The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has once again demanded an increase of at least Rs5 in electricity tariffs, according to sources familiar with the matter on Wednesday.
The sources indicated that electricity prices might increase by Rs5 per unit before July 10.
During virtual talks, the IMF was briefed on the difficult decision to raise gas prices as part of the economic measures. Sources from the Ministry of Finance stated that the IMF is satisfied with the steps taken towards economic improvement.
Significant progress on the new loan program is anticipated by the end of this month. The sources mentioned that pre-emptive actions regarding the increase in electricity tariffs will be fully implemented.
They also noted that staff-level negotiations on the new loan program were held in May, and since then, Pakistan has met most of the preconditions.
