Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, announced on Tuesday that non-filers of income tax will be given an opportunity to explain their situation before being banned from traveling abroad.
During his address to the National Assembly, the minister highlighted that according to Section 116 of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001, individuals will need to include an explanation regarding the declaration of foreign assets and the assets of a dependent spouse.
Furthermore, the minister stated that the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) will assess if a non-filer has a history of late returns and will impose fines accordingly. If a non-filer has missed the income tax return deadline even once, the fine will be increased.
It is important to note that the federal government has proposed measures to enhance tax enforcement by prohibiting non-filers from traveling abroad.
