The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) is likely to increase the electricity price by Rs3.49 per unit for one month due to fuel cost adjustment. The regulatory authority will hear the application filed by the Central Power Purchasing Authority (CPPA) today.
The CPPA’s request for fuel cost adjustment pertains to the month of April and, if approved, would impose an additional burden of Rs34 billion on consumers. The request highlights that electricity was not generated from furnace oil and diesel in April. Hydel power contributed 22.96% of the electricity generation, while local coal accounted for 10.19%.
Electricity generation from local gas was 11.28%, and from imported LNG was 24.97% in April. Nuclear fuel contributed 23.64% to electricity generation during the same month.
In related news, petrol prices may decrease on June 1, according to sources familiar with the development. The prices of petrol and diesel are expected to drop by approximately Rs6.50 to Rs7.50 per liter.
The sources noted that in the past 15 days, global market prices for petrol and diesel decreased by $3.25 and $2.10 per barrel, respectively. In the previous 15 days, prices had dropped by $8.70 and $4.30 per barrel.
Currently, petrol is priced at Rs273.10 per liter and diesel at Rs274.08 per liter.
