A day of national mourning is being observed today, May 21, in Pakistan to express fraternal solidarity with Iran, following the tragic death of Iranian President Sayyed Ebrahim Raisi and other dignitaries in a helicopter crash. The national flag will fly at half-mast throughout the country today.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared the day of national mourning.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian lost their lives in the crash, as confirmed by the Iranian ambassador to Pakistan.
Reza Amiri Moghadam, the Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan, announced on social media, “With utmost sorrow and profound grief, I must announce that President Seyed Ebrahim Raisi and FM Hussain Amirabdollahian embraced martyrdom due to a helicopter crash during a mission to inaugurate a developmental project with a neighboring country.”
The helicopter crashed in the mountains due to inclement weather on Sunday. According to media reports, the 63-year-old Iranian President, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, and other officials were returning after a visit to Azerbaijan province.
