Attaullah Tarar, Pakistan’s Federal Minister of Information and Broadcasting, recently announced a groundbreaking development: a Hollywood production team is set to film a major motion picture showcasing the vibrant culture of Pakistan.
The group, consisting of notable figures such as Mashal Saqib, Luisa Iskin, Andrew James Fiero, Sadia Ashraf, Badr Ikram, and James MC Milan, convened to discuss the film’s progress and its celebration of Pakistani heritage.
According to the Information Minister, this Hollywood project signifies a significant milestone for Pakistan’s film industry. He expressed sincere appreciation to the Hollywood team for choosing to spotlight Pakistani culture, hailing it as a prestigious honor that reflects the richness of Pakistan’s cultural tapestry.
“Our country boasts a wealth of history, literature, music, and art that is globally cherished,” Tarar emphasized.
He outlined the government’s initiatives to revitalize the film sector, highlighting the tax amnesty exclusively granted to the film industry in Pakistan.
“The restoration of the film policy under Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership has been pivotal,” Tarar noted. He underscored the industry’s newfound status and the incentives provided to encourage youth involvement and innovation in filmmaking
In the 2022–2023 budget, filmmakers were granted a five-year tax exemption, alongside tax breaks for new theatres, production companies, and film museums. Furthermore, exports of drama and film were exempt from taxation for a decade, fostering a conducive environment for artistic and tourism ventures.
To promote collaboration with local producers, international filmmakers are offered concessions, albeit with the stipulation that 70% of the film be shot in Pakistan, bolstering commercial interests and cultural promotion.
The team working on the film expressed optimism about its potential to showcase Pakistan’s diversity and allure, with hopes that it will dispel misconceptions about the country’s image worldwide.
Despite prevailing political challenges and security considerations, the Hollywood crew conveyed their appreciation for the minister’s support and Pakistan’s warm hospitality. They acknowledged the country’s filmmaking potential and pledged to support its burgeoning industry.
Tarar assured the Hollywood team of the government’s unwavering support and collaboration throughout the filmmaking process, signaling a promising era of cultural exchange.
