Prime Video has announced the green light for a feature-length documentary chronicling the final 12 days of tennis legend Roger Federer’s illustrious professional career.
The yet-to-be-titled documentary promises an intimate and candid look at Federer as he bids farewell to the sport that has defined his life for the past two decades.
Described as originally conceived as a personal home video, the documentary captures Roger Federer in his most vulnerable moments as he prepares to exit the tennis stage. What started as a private recording has evolved into a profound exploration of the emotions and reflections of a sporting icon.
The film will feature interviews with Federer’s fellow tennis greats, including Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray, providing insights into Federer’s impact on the game and the relationships he forged on the court.
Directed by Asif Kapadia, renowned for his award-winning documentaries such as Amy and Diego Maradona, and co-directed by Joe Sabia of Vogue’s “73 Questions” franchise, the documentary promises to deliver a compelling narrative of Federer’s final chapter in tennis.
In a statement, Federer shared his initial intentions behind the project, stating,
Initially, the idea was to capture the final moments of my professional tennis career so that I could have it later on to show my family and friends.
He expressed his surprise at the powerful moments captured during filming, transforming the project into a deeply personal journey. Federer also expressed his satisfaction in partnering with Prime Video for their global reach and significant presence in the film industry, ensuring the story resonates with both tennis enthusiasts and broader audiences worldwide.
Produced by Lafcadia Productions, helmed by Kapadia and George Chignell, the documentary is poised to shed light on Federer’s remarkable career, including his record-breaking 20 Grand Slam men’s singles titles and his historic eight Wimbledon victories.
Set to coincide with the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, the documentary is scheduled for release in July, offering fans a poignant tribute to the enduring legacy of Roger Federer, a true champion both on and off the court.
