Disney fans, rejoice! The iconic Wizards of Waverly Place is set to make a comeback with a sequel, and original stars Selena Gomez and David Henrie are joining forces once again.
Disney Branded Television has given the green light for a pilot of the follow-up series, marking a nostalgic return to the beloved world of magic and mischief.
Selena Gomez, who rose to fame through her role as Alex Russo, will make a guest appearance in the pilot. Meanwhile, David Henrie will reprise his role as Justin Russo, now a series regular. The new cast includes Janice LeAnn Brown, Alkaio Thiele, and Mimi Gianopulos, bringing fresh energy to the magical narrative.
The sequel, executive produced by Selena Gomez and David Henrie, is set to pick up the story after a mysterious incident at WizTech. Justin Russo, now an adult leading a wizard-free life with his wife and two sons, faces an unexpected turn of events when a young wizard in need of training shows up at his doorstep. To secure the future of the Wizard World, Justin must revisit his magical past.
Series lead Janice LeAnn Brown will portray the powerful young wizard Billie, mentored by Justin. Alkaio Thiele takes on the role of Roman Russo, Justin’s oldest son, and Mimi Gianopulos will play Justin’s wife, Giada.
The pilot, created and executive produced by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas (known for Raven’s Home), boasts an impressive lineup of talent. In addition to Gomez and Henrie, Gary Marsh and Andy Fickman will also serve as executive producers, with Fickman directing.
Gary Marsh, a key figure behind the success of Wizards of Waverly Place, played a pivotal role in bringing Selena Gomez to Disney after discovering her during an open casting call in Dallas.
The original series, which aired from 2007 to 2012, followed the Russo family as they navigated adolescence while mastering their magical abilities. The revival pilot aims to capture the essence of the beloved show while introducing new elements to enchant a fresh generation of viewers.
The announcement of the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel comes after years of speculation and fits into Disney Branded Television’s strategy of expanding Disney Channel’s lineup of multi-camera sitcoms. Selena Gomez, currently starring in the hit Hulu series Only Murders In the Building, continues her association with the Disney family as both a star and executive producer.
