The anticipation for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards is building as Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer emerges as the film to watch, securing a staggering 13 nominations.

The BAFTA nominations, announced Thursday in London, reveal a fierce competition, with surprises, snubs, and a few front-runners set to make the awards ceremony on February 18 a highly anticipated event.

Christopher Nolan’s atomic bomb biopic, Oppenheimer, dominated the nominations, securing nods in crucial categories. With 13 nominations, including Best Film and Best Director, Nolan’s film has become the most-nominated on home soil, reflecting its critical acclaim and success at the UK box office. Lead actor Cillian Murphy and supporting actors Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr. also received well-deserved recognition.

Following closely behind is Yorgos Lanthimos’ steampunk black comedy, Poor Things, which amassed 11 nominations. The film earned nods for Best Film and Best Actress, recognizing Emma Stone’s captivating performance.

In a surprising turn of events, Greta Gerwig’s cultural phenomenon, Barbie, experienced significant snubs, raising eyebrows in the industry. Despite initially sharing 15 Longlist slots with Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon, Barbie only secured five nominations, leaving it out of the Best Film and Best Director categories.

Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling earned nods for Leading Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively, but the film’s overall recognition fell short of expectations.

Killers of the Flower Moon and The Zone of Interest garnered nine nominations each, with surprising exclusions in certain categories. Martin Scorsese missed out on a director nomination, and Lily Gladstone was absent from the leading actress category for Killers of the Flower Moon.

Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest lost just one of its 10 Longlist slots, securing strong recognition with seven nominations.

The Holdovers and Maestro also joined the league of seven nominations, with Alexander Payne and Bradley Cooper recognized for Best Director.

All of Us Strangers landed six nominations, with Claire Foy and Paul Mescal earning recognition in supporting categories. Cord Jefferson’s satire American Fiction secured only one nomination for adapted screenplay. Michael Mann’s Ferrari received just one nomination for sound. Todd Haynes’ May December was shut out entirely despite early expectations.
