The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is prepared to enforce a series of robust measures targeting non-filers, with the first wave aimed at restricting mobile SIM cards and mobile phones.

In an effort to boost tax compliance, sources indicate that the FBR will issue an Income Tax General order by January 15 to initiate the implementation of these strict measures.

As part of this crackdown, non-filers will face the blocking of their mobile SIM cards and devices, marking a significant move by the FBR to tighten control over tax avoidance.

This strategic approach aims to create a restriction for individuals who have thus far avoided their tax obligations.

In addition to targeting mobile users, the FBR is devising a strategy to decrease electricity connections for non-filers. While the FBR acknowledges challenges in obtaining complete data on electricity connections of non-filers, it remains committed to exploring opportunities to enforce compliance. However, concerns have been raised about potential legal challenges that may arise from cutting electricity connections.

Remarkably, the FBR recently achieved a historic milestone by collecting Rs. 1,021 billion in a single month, specifically in December 2023.

This remarkable feat emphasizes the FBR’s commitment to enhancing revenue collection and ensuring fiscal discipline. The official statement released by the FBR highlights that not only were targets for December exceeded, but goals for the first six months of the current financial year were also exceeded.

The move to tighten the trap around non-filers aligns with the FBR’s overarching goal of strengthening the country’s revenue system and fostering a culture of tax compliance.

As these strict measures unfold, the FBR remains alert in navigating potential legal challenges, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive strategy to address tax avoidance and enhance fiscal stability.

The January 15 deadline for issuing the Income Tax General order signals a decisive step in this ongoing effort to instill accountability in the financial landscape.
