The Punjab Excise & Taxation Department has announced a strategic initiative to introduce virtual smart cards for vehicle registration across the province.
The move aims to address the existing backlog in the issuance of physical cards, which has been causing delays of up to a month.
Attributing the delays to challenges in the tendering process, the department recognizes the need for a more efficient solution. In response to this, it is actively exploring the integration of virtual smart cards as an alternative, efficient means of managing vehicle registrations.
The department acknowledges the public’s concerns regarding the delay and assures them that efforts are underway to expedite the traditional card issuance process.
However, to offer a more immediate solution, the proposal for virtual smart cards has been formally submitted to the provincial government for approval.
If approved, this shift in the registration process will allow vehicle owners to acquire their virtual smart cards conveniently through online channels. The official website of the excise department will serve as the primary platform for the seamless downloading of these virtual cards.
Virtual smart cards will contain identical information to their physical counterparts, including details such as the vehicle’s registration number, owner information, and vehicle specifications.
This digital transition is expected to streamline the registration procedures, providing a more accessible and efficient experience for vehicle owners across Punjab.
As the department awaits approval for this innovative initiative, the potential implementation of virtual smart cards signifies a progressive step toward modernizing and simplifying the vehicle registration process in the province.
