In the 22nd match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 held at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Pakistan set a challenging target of 283 runs for Afghanistan.

Opting to bat first on a slow track, Pakistan’s openers, Abdullah Shafiq and Imam-ul-Haq laid a strong foundation with a 56-run partnership.

Babar Azam, the captain of the Pakistan team, showcased his brilliance with a commanding 74, and together with Abdullah Shafique, contributed 54 runs, setting Pakistan on the path to a substantial total. Despite wickets falling at the other end, Babar Azam anchored the innings.

Mohammad Rizwan scored eight runs, while Saud Shakeel added 25 to the total. Following Babar Azam’s departure, Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed delivered a robust finish, each contributing 40 runs. Pakistan concluded their innings at 282/7 within the allocated 50 overs.

Noor Ahmad was the star performer for Afghanistan with the ball, claiming three crucial wickets, while Naveen-ul-Haq secured two wickets. Mohammad Nabi and Azmatullah Omarzai each chipped in with one wicket.

This match carries significant importance for both teams, as their survival in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 depend on the outcome. A loss for Afghanistan would likely eliminate them from the tournament, while Pakistan, under the leadership of Babar Azam, will have little room for error if they face a defeat.
