In a tweet that nearly broke the internet, the man behind Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter’s newest alter-ego ‘X,’ Elon Musk offered a billion dollars to Wikipedia. However, there’s a catch — He wants them to change their name to “Dickipedia.”
Musk believes that the new name is a far more accurate name for the online encyclopedia as according to him, it’s “in the interest of accuracy.”
The billionaire’s billion-dollar dare comes with a quirky condition – Wikipedia has to keep the new moniker for at least a year.
This eyebrow-raising proposal is just the latest chapter in Musk’s social media escapades. Ever since he took the reins of Twitter or ‘X,’ he’s been the internet’s wild card. Some might call it a mid-life branding crisis, but we’re calling it Elon being Elon.
Musk’s recent beef with Wikipedia’s founder Jimmy Wales started when Wales accused Elon of playing censor to critics of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, right before a hotly contested election.
Musk, in true Musk fashion, fired back. He questioned the financial transparency of the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that runs Wikipedia. Musk raised eyebrows by asserting that the entire text content of Wikipedia could easily fit on a mobile device.
He openly questioned the fundraising efforts of Wikipedia, suggesting that the substantial sums raised appeared to surpass the platform’s operational requirements.
It remains to be seen if Jimmy Wales takes up on Elon Musk’s “interesting” offer. What do you think, let us know in the comments below.
