In the prediction of heavy snowfall, authorities have taken the decision to close the Babusar Pass earlier than originally anticipated.

Deputy Commissioner Diamer, Arif Ahmed, has indicated that the closure may be temporary, depending on improving weather conditions and the clearing of snow. However, the pass is closed for an extended eight-month period, commencing in November and lasting until June.

The region has experienced an intense and unanticipated snowfall, leading local authorities to impose restrictions on road access ahead of the usual schedule. During this period, travelers are encouraged to utilize the Karakoram Highway as an alternative route.

“The pass’s status depends on the weather. Normally, it closes in November after heavy snowfall and the freezing temperatures set in,” stated the Deputy Commissioner.

Comparatively, the journey from Diamer to Mansehra, which typically takes 14 hours via the Karakoram Highway, can be completed in just 7 hours through the now-closed Babusar Pass.

Recent incidents have underscored the challenges posed by the harsh winter conditions. Heavy snowfall has stranded numerous tourists in the area, necessitating their relocation to Chilas City by local authorities. The extreme cold, with temperatures dropping to -15 degrees Celsius, renders nighttime policing operations unfeasible.

In addition to the weather, security concerns and slippery road conditions contribute to the protracted closure of the Babusar Pass. Tragically, a recent incident saw a tourist from Punjab lose his life during a robbery attempt at Babusar top. The attackers had blocked the road with heavy stones to stop vehicles, prompting the victim’s driver to reverse the vehicle. Tragically, during this attempt to escape, the culprits fired at the car, resulting in the untimely death of the victim, identified as Mohammad Rashid.

As the closing of Babusar Pass continues and local authorities monitor weather conditions, travelers and officials alike remain hopeful for the pass’s eventual reopening, allowing for safe and efficient travel through this attractive mountain route.
