Pakistan showed kindness and generosity towards Afghan refugees who have required shelter within its borders.

Over the decades, Pakistan has welcomed millions of Afghan refugees, making recognition as a nation that has embraced more refugees than any other in modern history. This hospitality was extended even further with the withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan, leading to an increase in the number of Afghan refugees seeking refuge in Pakistan.

While Pakistan’s compassion and hospitality are commendable, it’s essential to address the sustainability of hosting such a significant refugee population. Pakistan faces numerous pressing challenges, including economic and security issues. Afghan refugees, while seeking safety and stability, do place an additional burden on the country’s economy.

Moreover, the movement of Afghans across the border has led to concerns such as the smuggling of US dollars and other goods. This illegal trade has had adverse effects on Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves, further straining its economic stability.

Security concerns are also a part of this complex issue. Not all individuals crossing the border are innocent refugees. Some undesirable elements have demoralized this movement to enter Pakistan under the excuse of ordinary citizens, posing security threats to the nation.

Given the improving situation in Afghanistan, it is imperative to devise a mechanism for the early and dignified return of Afghan refugees to their homeland. The responsibility for facilitating this process lies not only with Pakistan but also with the international community and the UN Refugee Agency.

Pakistan has hosted Afghan refugees for an extended period without significant external support. It is now compulsory upon the world to contribute to creating conditions in Afghanistan that will enable the safe and voluntary return of Afghan nationals to their homeland. This includes addressing the factors that have driven them to seek refuge in Pakistan in the first place.

Simultaneously, Pakistani authorities must enhance border security to restrict the smuggling of currency and goods and prevent the access of undesirable elements. Addressing cross-border attacks with the Afghan authorities is also a priority. While Pakistan’s generosity towards Afghan refugees is commendable, the current situation demands a comprehensive and responsible approach to deportation. This approach should ensure the safety, dignity, and voluntary return of Afghan refugees to their home country, while addressing the economic and security challenges faced by Pakistan. It is a shared responsibility that requires the cooperation of the international community, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
